No Thank You.
10 Speeds is the absolute worst thing to ever happen to mountain bikes. Why is everyone praising it? I cannot conceive any , not one single benefit. If we were all sprinters on road bikes I can understand the need to shift through 1 tooth increments during the sprint, But, they make cassettes for those guys , always have. This is more about Planned Obsolesce than anything, not about performance , not about weight. I'm calling you Lame engineers (who probably don't even ride) out. FAIL. How can adding another cog be any lighter?! The chain gets narrower on the outside and may shave weight but loses durability. Shimano cannot use the same 10 speed road chain on their mtn group because of twisting and durability issues. Adding bigger cogs ( 34and 36) require longer chains , adding significant amounts of weight . Pizza cogs also require longer cages on the rear derailleur=more weight. Also chain tension is lower in the smallest cogs so the chain bounces all over the place when you pedal down a hill. The sloppy chain problem is even worse when a single front chainring is used. Now it is quite obvious that 1x9s and 2x9s require the chain to cross from extreme ends of the cassette. Chains under torque want to be straight and when they are not, there is friction, wear, and measurable wattage loss.
Now I apologize for rambling excessively, Thank you for following. The granny gear ,, it weighs next to nothing. If you use it you can use a much smaller cassette, saving cog weight , chain weight , and saving derailleur cage weight. you will also have better chain lines and tighter chains when using smaller cogs. Now Q- factor ( google it if you need a definition) eliminating granny gears could allow for narrower q- factor, of course only XX has a narrower option, but doesn't make a 180 arm, wtf are they thinking? XT cranks come in 180. I don't think the sram Red does though. They should have pulled the big ring and moved the granny out to get the narrow q- factor. I wish we still had the square taper standard when you could adjust and buy different length spindles, but , inability to adjust is part of integration. I cannot condemn integration so I won't knock it too much. SO, If you want to use two front chainrings get rid of the big ring! You have to be going 40 mph to spin out a 40X11 BTW.
Back to the cassette - the XX cassette is light because it is aluminum and machined , not because it has 10 cogs. Therefore a 9 or 8 speed cassette manufactured the same would be even lighter. If it was a 11-28 it would be really light. But screw the alloy cogs , they wear out too quickly , especially considering the price. They still don't perform as well as shimano cassettes. Now spacing -Sram seems to be better with the 1:1 ratio. Ghost shifting and der. adjusting is not too much of a headache. The real bad decision Sram made was not offering microshift for the front on their 10 speed shifters. Sorry 3 clics is all you get, and your chain will always rub at some point. I would rather have a friction thumb shifter. Now that we are thinking about shifting lets think about Shimano, they make better cassettes and chainrings , but that Damn 2:1 or 1:2 shift ratio remains unchanged!!! No way is that crap going to maintain adjustment. I am not Psychic But I foresee Many headaches in the future. I remember in the 90's when we had 7-8 speed spacing , adjustments were much fewer and farther between. Actually we never changed our corroded cables , and never adjusted the things. Those drivetrains were cheap, they would wear forever and they always worked. I want Square tapers , Friction front shifters, and six cogs Damn It! BTW Sam Hill won worlds on a 6 speed drivetrain. I am going to stock up on NOS Grip shifts and 9 speed dura ace cassettes. Searching eBay now.

Full Time base miles in November , Cape Epic in 4 Months

Cross Vegas- you will be disqualified for unauthorized feeding, handups, or money.

Dear Greg Gibson,

The following request to change your USAC category has been denied by USA Cycling
Member: Greg Gibson
License: Cyclo-cross Racer
Request to change category from Cat 4 to Cat 2

USA Cycling Response from Curtis Tolson:
Re submit for a cat 3 and race. Just kidding. I have no emotional involvement in the event. How can I? Not when I believe the jury is still out on who to blame for that one. It's a little gut wrenching to think about the same guys behind it declaring it a national holiday.

As I rode I thought about the DH trail closures, Primarily the reasons for closing the LCC trail. Public safety. Government's concern for public safety. This is of course not the real reason , but let's pretend it is.

Government is basically when a group of free humans ( as defined by John Locke) collectively through consent give up a portion of their freedoms to a representative group to protect the freedoms of, and to serve the whole. If such a consent was not achieved, Locke argued in favour of a right of rebellion.

The type of public safety imposed upon the trail users is a little new. A little history now. During the first half of the 20th century the government was not too concerned with what happened to an automobile when it left the roadway. They did not have barriers or guardrails to keep you from driving off a cliff. Your fault, to bad. We now have sophisticated guardrails and safety features built into our roads and highways that save lives.

Now, riding a mountain bike is a little dangerous to begin with, with or without the "stunts". I don't care. This is why I choose to do it. It's fun. You can't Nerf the world.
Has any research been done by the forest service or an outside party that presents any evidence of the dangers and potential lives saved if the trail were to be closed? Does anyone at the forest service even know shit about mountain biking? Do they know that "stunts" and features actually slow the riders speed and reduce the seriousness of accidents? This is the reason they put barriers in cyclocross races. Riding a road bike down the canyon is very dangerous. Should they close the canyon road to bikes?

The people that work for the forest service are lazy people who need the job security that a government organization provides. They are not intelligent enough to make it in a competitive private work environment.
I do not consent to these morons deciding how and where I will ride my bicycle. Without such consent I have a right to rebellion.

Well, they already have destroyed our trails and there will be a meeting about it on Tue. What's the point? It's done. They already closed and destroyed the trail. I will go to the meeting and tell them- I hate you for destroying something I love.

Bring on the Rebellion.

Wake Up

Another DH trail closure.

“These user-created trails are not constructed to official standard, are not sustainable, and feature hazardous man-made “stunt” apparatuses,” said Cathy Kahlow, Ranger of the Salt Lake District, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. “In fact, one trail empties into a campground and creates the potential for serious collisions between campers and fast-moving mountain bikers.”

The other good, challenging DH trail you can shuttle in a car is also being closed by THE FEDS.

The LCC trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

This has less to do with watersheds and animal habitats than control and bitterness toward the "DOWN HILLERS."

I don't remember giving consent to this government to decide how the land in my community is used.

PLEASE PLEASE my friends, do not stop riding these trails. They have placed logs and trees accros the trail. I own a chain saw if anyone wants to borrow it. Just move them. Make another STUNT out of them.

It reminds me of when we first started building a section of DH specific, challenging trail at the ski resort, The mountain manager went to try and ride it and came back freaked out, said it was "too dangerous." Really he's a just a pussy, Resistant to change, evolution , and progression.

I looked into and found that this trail is over 100 years old and was used by miners during the Alta gold rush. When did it become illegal??

I found this video on U tube

They are closing my favorite trail.

Yep , I never though this kind of crap would ever happen here! My favorite trail to train on these days has been Squaw Peak DH. I like to ride my DH bike down it, and I like to ride my XC bike down it.
I like riding up the 30 minute road climb because I can hold an even intensity , then shred a challenging decent. This is where I burn up brake pads and test chopped up rotors.
"The forest service is working on a wildlife habitat project up squaw peak. Their plan is to create better habitat/wintering grounds for the deer, elk, turkeys, etc... In the process they are closing down any unmarked/mapped trails."
Bullshit!
They already bulldozed the hell out of the top section, - destroying the turkey habitat. ( makes me wish it was thanksgiving now, I'd like to chow some bird)

video of upper section -by Fast Dan

Here's the deal-TRAIL MEETING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH PLEASANT GROVE FOREST SERVICE STATION BACK OF BLDG. THEY WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE TRAIL CLOSURES. WE NEED EVERYONE WE CAN GET TO COME TO THE MEETING!!

and throw rotten fruit. Like they used to do to politicians back in the day (100years ago) You can pull up some precedent law for your defense if they try to charge you with assault. HaHa

Actually I encourage everyone to Keep Riding the Trails - as much as possible

And cause mischief , a lot of it. I think they are dead set already on closing it. , So ,Spit at the rangers when you get a chance, paint some graffiti, GET MAD, and burn something down. Why act logical? Is it logical to save turkeys by bulldozing the hell out of the mountain. These people don't practice logic. If you are under 18 and can't buy spray paint, please contact me.

Here a few stock picks of the lower section:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TIXWk5s-sbI/AAAAAAAABIw/yZrcmpx5oIQ/s400/gb+shipping+023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514049248238154162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TIXWkdy4G9I/AAAAAAAABIo/bT-n594e1xM/s400/gb+shipping+022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514049240746695634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TIXWkOTQWLI/AAAAAAAABIg/2AWaAyLBqJI/s400/gb+shipping+044.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514049236587534514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TIXWjh_ZV9I/AAAAAAAABIY/2tDprV30JNM/s400/gb+shipping+021.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514049224693077970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TIXWjJJFJOI/AAAAAAAABIQ/NebHpyJxwBc/s400/gb+shipping+020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514049218022810850" />

Don't Stop Riding The Trail.

Park City Point to Point

I have done a hand full of Hundred-mile mountain bike races, and I would have to say this is the best one. OK so, it's not a 100. It is an 8 hour race. It's not a bunch of roads. It's not flat. It's not smooth. It is for people who can ride mountain bikes. Not for people who like to draft, pace, attack , or sit in.

I went to this thing feeling a little heavy from leadville and the Brec-epic.
No Problem.
I wore two pair of shorts so that I could sit as much as possible on my hardtail.
I ate as much candy and gu as I could. I rode my own race. I ran super high pressure so as to not pinch flat.
I began to feel my best after 3 hours. When I pulled into the last feedzone I ran over something sharp and began squirting sealant. I was very fortunate to have my home brew latex seal it up and ended up holding 30 psi. Even with only 10 miles to go I was still stoked to not have to use a tube. I hate tubes. If you have tubes you either have too heavy of tires or you ride like a pussy or you get a lot of flats.

We got cash for the top 5 and chairs for under 8 hour finishers.

See results below,

Here: Winner Alex G ( who is absolutely on fire by the way) gives us a little taste from his helmet cam. <br That SOB Chucky pulled my along the flats then hurt me on the big climb. I lost a little time when I wrapped up and twisted my chain near the end - good thing I got some mad trailside wrenching skills. Got a new dura ace one from the Shimano dude. Best part of the day was my mom and dad with a coke at 15 miles to go. Today was 3.5 hours and 7,000 ft of climbing , Tomorow, In the morning, we are doing 9,000 ft and should be 4+ hours. I am feeling good and excited for this one. I was thinking of rocking the all white full Corona Kit. I now gotta ship a buch of ebay stuff I brought with me , Cheers!

Day one - I don't know how fast I should be riding

I mean , I really have no clue.
We had the 5.0 give us a neutral lead out, but as the front guys rode faster , the police drove faster ,stringing things out a bit , and making for a little suffering to stay on the lead group. We had a really good group. 15 or so guys made it , I was right off the back. We climbed and climbed and it all split up.
I spent most of the day chasing Chuck and Shannon, but I slowly creeped farther and farther back. I kept going back and forth with Ross Schnell. He kept stopping, to pee , to get something at the feed zone , to check something on his bike, and eventually to mess with his broken pedal. Following That guy on the descents is always a good idea.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/THHgQByhm1I/AAAAAAAABGo/y09nNLKJ7mc/s400/chucks+prolight.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508430385213709138" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/THHgP6IeNWI/AAAAAAAABGg/GaX7XZrns7Y/s400/chucky.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508430383158277474" />

Some of the climbs were so technical that it was hard to decide if I should ride them or not. yeah , they were all ride able , but it felt like you had to blow your wad on the first day to do it. So, I had no idea how hard to ride. Do I lose time today or lose time tomorrow? Does it even matter when you are losing 5 min per hour to the leaders?
I am totally stoked that I didn't pinch flat. The promoter mike described the downhills as full of sidewall munchers, not like carpet munchers , or the munchies. They were actually baby heads, the edges weren't too sharp , but there were so many of them that, unless you wanted to ride like a pussy you are destined to slam a few..thousand. I like to use the technique of nose wheeling down to save the rear tire.
Tomorrow, In the morning , we get to start on main street. We have been promised better climbs, even better descents, and more singletrack.

Brec Epic stage one prelim results

I called it.

Open Men:
1, Jeremiah Bishop (Cannondale) 3:05:14
2, Alex Grant (Cannondale) 3:05:15
3, Ben Sonntag (Cannondale) 3:09.15
4, Josh Tostado (Bach Builders) 3:10:37
5, Macky Franklin (Yeti-Sunflower) 3:16:00
6, Matt Shriver (Ft. I find it a fine line between the two. I must confess my sadomasochist tendencies. At this point I am a little turned on.
At the pre race meeting tonight I was pleasantly surprised. I noticed the lack of amateurs. It has irritated me a bit the way these sweetbros who you will never see on wed night racing show up to their one event they do all year just to say they finished. Just another notch in their belt to go along with their marathon, Ironman , or that guided rafting trip down whatever gnarly river. Last week's LT100 was full of them, wearing Lifetime Fitness garb, Gym Rats,,, A bunch of posers eating up my world. Glad to not see them here:)
I saw plenty of real athletes, real mtn bike riders. This thing will be heavy with competition , No TDF racers, but many of the top guys from LT100 + a bunch more ,

and the Aussies I haven't seen since La Routa a few years back - Cheers!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/THC3Wbz9mMI/AAAAAAAABGY/t8UjFmTQQ5E/s400/shit+170.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508103940324825282" />
Race Chow

Outside the condo today we where approached by a man in boots , shorts, and a wool shirt from 19th century Holland, it was Rishi Grewal. Allow me to show my age, Rishi was a top professional mtb racer in the 90's , one of the guys we used to watch as kids. Chuck and I began racing in '95. These were the days of Tuesday night Decker Dash, dominated my a 110 lb Cris Fox. It seems as though the guys we race against now are the same kids we battled with 15 years ago. Most of the top guys in Utah cut their teeth at these weekly races.

Stage One Tomorrow should be 3.5 hours- a little short for my tastes. I am hoping that the multi day effort will slow the pace a bit.
My predictions for tomorrow? Bishop, Grant, and Sontag sweep the podium.

Insanity is a state where a person can't tell whats real, Well,, what's real now is insane --and if I accepted it as real , I'd have to lose my mind.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iR4R_dN9T_k/TG9QJltxvtI/AAAAAAAABGQ/YS8acEOzL6o/s400/felt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507708994970566354" />
Let the Insanity Begin.

I have decided to begin blogging again.

Chuck, Mom , Dad, and I are shacked up in Breckenridge for the Breck Epic.

6 day MTB stage race , 40 or so miles each day 6K or so climbing each day.
I have been waiting all year for a climby, high altitude event like this all year!

I am totally stoked about my equiptment, I love my tyres, my brakes, and all the wierd modifications.
